this IMPACT REPORT IS ABOUT:
This Impact Report showcases our journey in forming communities of change, where every individual played a powerful role.
As we look back to another year at U&I, we wanna talk about the remarkable progress we have made together in our shared mission of changing lives through education and nurturing a sustainable environment. Through your dedication and generosity, we have extended the reach of our programs, empowering countless young minds who otherwise would have been left behind.
In 2022-23, volunteering across NGOs faced significant challenges, with 41,00,00,000 volunteers dropping out globally and 80% of organisations stopping all volunteer activities due to funding. But through the support of our community, we were able to retain and recruit 2896 passionate volunteers who selflessly mentored 2295 students. Through High-Quality Education and active mentorship, we helped over 2295 disadvantaged students realise their potential to break out of the cycle of poverty in one generation. A custom age-appropriate curriculum was developed, focusing on ensuring all students can read, write, and comprehend English. The curriculum was piloted and developed to match the diverse learning needs of our students.
We also launched a new program called Ignite, a platform to spark social action among school students across India. Through corporate volunteering, we formed strong CSR partnerships mobilising 4,276 volunteers for 80 impactful engagements. These initiatives supported causes like education, recycling, farming, lake and beach clean-ups, school painting, animal welfare, tree plantations, and care for persons with disabilities.
We are truly grateful to have you as part of our journey. Together, let’s create a better future for every child and nurture a sustainable world for the next generation. Thank you for Building Outstanding Communities of Change.

MISSION
Equip young people to invest in the lives of at-risk and disadvantaged children through impactful, high-quality education and mentorship.
WHY
Almost 50% of students drop out before they enter high school. Many of these children are daily wage earners, and the cycle of poverty continues. Ever since the pandemic, these figures have doubled.
WHO
We recruit, motivate, train, and walk alongside thousands of volunteers so they display incredible passion, energy, and commitment to the cause of giving the next generation a leg up to bring radical change in the lives of under-served children across the nation.
HOW
Through U&I Teach, our committed tutors invest in the lives of under-served children through after-school education held both online and offline.
building a robust learning module post-pandemic
1. volunteer recruitment and 1:2 teacher-student ratio
The U&I program's distinctive approach pairs two students with one teacher, offering personalized attention. Despite seeing a drop in volunteering post the pandemic, through strategic efforts and a notably higher conversion rate, we successfully onboarded 2400+ dedicated volunteers to teach 2300 students. This outcome translated to a commendable volunteer-to-student ratio of 1:2.
2. revamping our curricullum
We recognized the importance of prioritizing fundamental English skills over an extensive yet traditional curriculum. This insight inspired us to launch the ARIVU program, drawing from the TARL teaching method, which creatively instilled essential English skills like letters, words, sentences, and stories. This shift from our previous eight-level literacy curriculum produced outstanding results, encouraging us to revamp our approach. With a one-on-one volunteer-to-teacher ratio, we streamlined our curriculum, resulting in a customized U&I Teach English foundational literacy program with teacher guides and engaging workbooks.
3. prioritising counselling to our teaching approach
The TEACH program integrates tailored external interventions, such as counselling, to address the specific needs of at-risk children in our centres. In collaboration with allied organizations in 2022-2023, we introduced counselling at three Mumbai centres. Comprehensive assessments revealed a prevalent fear of exams among the children. We organized a three-hour workshop to equip them with effective exam strategies. We conducted 813 counselling sessions and 15 workshops within our program.
The counselling sessions had a remarkable impact, improving children's performance. This success led the Learning Center Partners (LCP) to expand counselling to the centre in 2021, resulting in notable transformations in behaviour, learning enthusiasm, and overall demeanour. In 2022, the LCP's active involvement continued to enhance our students' academic skills and learning environment.

Impact story on counselling sessions
In Mumbai, we involved counsellors in three centers across the city, including one in Dadar. Here, we aimed to understand what troubled the kids deeply. What we found was surprising: these young minds were haunted by exam fears. The pressure was suffocating them. So, we rolled up our sleeves and got creative.
We hosted a three-hour workshop designed to arm these kids with the tools to ace exams. It wasn't just about studying; it was about building resilience and confidence.
The impact was incredible. The kids, once crippled by fear, now stood tall and brave. They learned exams weren't monsters but opportunities.
Collaborating with our allies, we've transformed lives and opened the path to a hopeful future. We conducted 813 counseling sessions and 15 workshops. Through counselling, we've given our students the strength to conquer their fears, chase their dreams, and build promising futures. This is a story of change, hope, and the power of teamwork.

LEADx was nothing short of extraordinary, a shining example of excellence; each of the three days was a blockbuster in its own right - from the engaging breakout sessions to the vibrant before and after parties. The abundance of humour made these three days the most memorable of my life, with each day scoring a perfect 12 on the enjoyment scale. - Dr Karmjeet Singh. Leader - Kolkata Team
The modules were a personal revelation for me, offering a wealth of techniques and insights. Reflecting on my own education, I couldn't help but wish for these classes during my school days. Introducing concepts like SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) to children early on is truly invaluable.
Moreover, witnessing my student's transformation was heartwarming. She's typically an introvert with a small circle of friends, but as we progressed, she began to trust and open up to me. This was especially meaningful because it coincided with her growing seriousness about her upcoming board exams. I could clearly see the impact of the classes, with her acknowledging their value approximately 7 out of 10 times.

Through the LIFT program, we actively involve students in community centers and shelter homes when they reach the age of 15. In addition to their regular school tutoring, we embark on preparing them for life beyond the home. This includes guidance for higher education, such as college, or pursuing a career aligned with their aspirations.
As we envision expanding the LIFT program, our ultimate goal is to
offer financial support to these young adults, enabling them to
afford education and pursue their dreams until they
attain financial independence.

Lift Impact testimonials
Meet Adarsh, a talented young athlete from Chennai. When the classes initially commenced, we conducted self-discovery activities, during which our volunteers noticed that Adarsh was quite reserved and hesitant to interact with others.
However, as the year progressed, a remarkable transformation took place. Adarsh's confidence peaked to the point where he began discussing the aspiration of achieving higher grades. He set a personal goal to score 50 additional marks, with the dream of gaining admission to a college in Bangalore. The LIFT program played a pivotal role in nurturing his self-assurance and helping him realize his ambitions.
Every week, we witnessed a noticeable shift in the student's engagement with the classes and their interaction with our volunteers. They became increasingly open and interactive and actively participated in the lessons. Our approach emphasized interactive learning rather than a purely transactional one. For example, during a module on topics like account opening, card usage, and strategies to avoid banking fraud risks, it was truly astonishing to see the students adeptly addressing complex questions by the end of each session. Witnessing their growing awareness of these important subjects was truly remarkable.

U&I EMPOWER
MISSION
U&I EMPOWER is a volunteering ecosystem that aims to empower corporate volunteers to take social action. Through virtual and in-person initiatives, EMPOWER bridges the gap between corporate volunteers and NGOs across the world. With a vision and mission to engage a Million volunteers, U&I EMPOWER aims to enable communities of changemakers to catalyse social transformation worldwide.
WHY
In 2020, India stood at 57th of 110+ countries in the CAF World Giving Index (a rounded measure of giving behaviour in a country). Our civic participation has been very low in terms of volunteering hours. One reason is while we have thousands of NGOs, the sector is not organised and lacks the technical expertise to involve the youth in the country who want to make a difference.
WHO
U&I Empower establishes a wide array of volunteering opportunities for working professionals through social service. Through our volunteering engagements, we work with like-minded individuals who want to give back to society on the ground level.
HOW
By making volunteering simple and meaningful, Empower has leveraged technology and resources to serve a community of change-makers through online and in-person initiatives. We organise short and medium-term engagements ranging from a period of 1 hour to 3 months. We curate activities in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, which are simple and impactful.

Building a playground for these students from low-income schools was truly rewarding. After building the playground, the kids welcomed us and thanked us for building the playscape and gifting it to them. This moment makes me smile every time I think about it.

The 10-day fitness challenge cum sponsoring students' education was a brilliant idea! U&I always comes up with something more exciting and better. The linking of health and doing good just sets the right ignition. I especially loved how this event promoted teamwork and kept us motivated to strive more throughout the 10 days!

Testimonials
It felt like I was going down the memory lane. For an hour, all of us sat down together to create a DIY Clock which would help children learn about checking time in a visual form. The event was very engaging, and I loved how it was organised from start to finish.
I enrolled for Mission Fitness, thinking it would be like any other corporate event, but the energy and the way people went the extra mile motivated and cheered up others to get the final leg in the journey; I loved & enjoyed it!
It was great getting some time to learn and connect with team members we always don't get a chance to interact with. The facilitators did a great job organizing everything and making sure that the team was comfortable.
Upcycling waste materials into something useful was why I signed up for the activity! I loved how it was facilitated, beginning from the icebreaker to the step-by-step tutorial for making newspaper bags. Loved the end product, and mostly loved the experience!
Creating infographics for children from under-served communities was an enthralling experience. The activity consisted of very interesting topics, which also helped me learn new things while researching it.
Everything was very good. The farmhouse was beautiful, and the things which we did there will be the best memories. The facilitators from U&I are so sweet, and you managed everything so well that you both became a part of us. Thank you!!
I experienced an immense sense of happiness after accomplishing

Mission: To spark social action in every student. We recognise that this can be done in multiple ways. At present, the program has three main models - classes, events and projects - to realise this mission.
Why: Today's students are the changemakers of the future. Equipping them with the necessary skills to tackle current and foreseeable problems, as delineated in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, is the need of the hour.
How: The Ignite program immerses students in experiential, socially-directed activities, fostering a habit of social action. We offer diverse, service-driven initiatives addressing various social causes across schools. Our tailored curricula include modules, events, and projects, collaborating with NGOs or social entrepreneurs as needed. Additionally, we conduct crowdfunding drives in many schools, supporting education in U&I's Teach program.
Who: Through the Ignite program, students from diverse partner schools develop essential changemaker skills like empathy, social awareness, and leadership, fostering a culture of social action. The majority of crowdfunding proceeds from Ignite partner schools support children in our after-school Teach program.
school model
An 8-week modular program introduces different Sustainable Development Goals each week through engaging experiential activities. These activities promote classroom discussions. Weekly Home Challenges extend students' skills and motivation to take action beyond school. The program culminates in 'Seva Day,' encouraging all students to collectively initiate 'actions for change' in their school and surroundings.
Our event-based model is action-focused and short-term, typically spanning 1-5 days, focusing on one Sustainable Development Goal. We utilize experiential activities and nudges to instil lasting habits. Our exhibitions identify societal gaps and offer solutions. For instance, our Financial Literacy program empowers high school students to learn about government saving schemes and teach basic financial literacy to school support staff.
MODULAR CURRICULUM
EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS
PROJECTS:
Our projects are mid-term engagements ranging from 5 days to 3 weeks. These action-packed sessions challenge students to address real-life issues through on-ground volunteering. Students take ownership of solving socio-economic and human rights problems in partner schools' areas. For instance, our 'Play for Change' project, in collaboration with an NGO, involves students in building playgrounds in underprivileged schools through activities like excavation, painting, and drilling."
CROWDFUNDING:
Procuring resources is crucial for social action. The Ignite program enhances students' pitching, networking, and resource procurement skills through crowdfunding drives. All proceeds support education in U&I's Teach program.
The progress of each student under all our models is tracked through a customised online portal, and various levels of certification are provided based on performance.
U&I Ignite stories
"Thank you for curating meaningful (Socially Useful Productive Work) SUPW programmes for the students of Std 11 and 12 of (our school). The building of the play equipment and the crowdfunding were unique ideas, and the students enjoyed the interaction with both U&I as well as Anthill teams".
- Priti (Co-ordinator, Mallya Aditi International School)
"Overall, I have been very happy with the sessions and also the interactions with the students. They (students) seem to really give a thought when we encourage them to reflect, for example, when we made them close their eyes and think for a bit about the challenge that a differently abled person would go through".
